Only President Grant knows that Brinkton is a native of Antares where one year equals 878 earth years. The life span on Antares is 150 years so Brinkton can actually live more than 100,000 earth years. Brinkton is the premier agent of the Council of Planetary Salvation (COPS), a cosmic agency dedicated to saving civilizations that will increase knowledge freedom. . The COPS are opposed by El Waakier, a brilliant but unstable Riff scientist and the President calls on Brinkton for help when huge insects are developed by El Waakier to destroy Washington, D.C. Brinkton and his crew of midgets (he rescued them from a cruel circus owner) devise an ingenious plan to destroy the insects thus saving the USA and its new found unity after the Civil War. The COPS know that freedom will grow and that the forerunner of this movement will be the remarkable new nation that will soon occupy all of North American. Problems, however, never cease and the COPS time detectors show that El Waakier has disguised himself as El Saad Saq and threatens to help Spain defeat the USA in the Spanish-American War , a dangerous node in future time that might destroy the growth of democracy and freedom.

 

 

 

The war with Spain itself was swift and decisive. During the four months it lasted, not a single American reverse of any importance occurred. A week after the declaration of war, Commodore George Dewey, then at Hong Kong, proceeded with his squadron of six vessels to the Philippines. His orders were to prevent the Spanish fleet based there from operating in American waters. He caught the entire Spanish fleet at anchor and destroyed it without losing an American life
